Our Story
Policy and Conflict Resolution Studies Center 2018 Annual Conference
Trump assuming office as the “leader of the free world” has prompted a new phase not only in America but in the global world as well. The fluctuation between the right and left in any system of governance is only normal in any democratic system as it reflects the voice of the people. However, what makes the “Trump Era” a new phenomenon is the fact that for the first time in the modern democratic scene, there is a president of a democratic country who capitalizes and nourishes divisive, racist, misogynist and populist sentiments. This in many ways has resulted in a change in the global political culture, where right wing leaders have found a legitimate venue to capitalize on people’s emotions of fear of the other, exclusionism and racist sentiments.
The Age of Populism
We the people…
The spirit of the constitution of the United States of America that is exemplified by the three words mentioned above sums up the essence of the modern age. The populous in the modern age are no longer perceived as subjects that are ruled by the sovereign but as agents who are governed by an elected legitimate authority that is there to represent the needs of the “majority” of the citizens of the modern state.

With modernity, the collective which comes in different shapes and forms has been empirically studied through different lenses and was acknowledged as a force that has the capacity to influence the political environment.
Assessing Conflict Resolution Today
The Conflict Studies Research Center at the Arab American University of Palestine plans to hold its annual conference titled “Conflict Resolution Redefined.”
The conference, scheduled to take place on December 16-18, 2023, will critically review and reexamine the definition of Conflict Resolution. In an effort to redeem it as a definition, scholars have emphasized the vital role culture plays in explicating structures of power that may be incriminated through a biased understanding of the term. As such redefining it liberates the term from its Eurocentric past.
